About Me
Hello and a warm welcome to my website. I am a qualified humanistic counsellor and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). My initial counsellor training was in Person-Centred therapy which is a form of talking therapy developed by Carl Rogers. Rogers believed that everyone has the potential for personal growth and change irrespective of their background and past experiences. In Person-Centred therapy, the relationship that is created between counsellor and client is the key to supporting you to explore your world and move towards a happier way of being. I aim to create a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space in which you feel valued and truly heard.
Although Person-Centred is my core approach I also integrate other ways of working such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)/ Thought Field Therapy (TFT). CBT can help you to recognise how your thoughts and beliefs are linked to your feelings and behaviours. I can support you identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with more helpful ways of thinking. Solution Focussed therapy empowers you to identify your strengths and successes and how these can be applied to areas of your life that you are struggling with. EFT and TFT utilise tapping on particular pressure points on the body and face to release and change energy flow. This can influence emotional states such as anxiety and depression. I also have an interest in working creatively within counselling and offer sandplay therapy for clients who are interested in creative counselling. Sandplay therapy allows you to use symbols within a sand tray to explore your emotions and experiences in a different way other than simply talking about them. I recognise everyone is unique and one approach does not fit all, therefore working in this way I can tailor sessions to suit your individual needs.

I have over 20 years’ experience in supporting people to make positive changes to their lives in a range of different settings. Prior to qualifying as a counsellor I have worked in inpatient mental health hospitals, community settings, police custody suites and prisons. I have had the privilege of working with people from all walks of life and really value diversity and how unique each individual is.
As a counsellor I have worked for Holy Rood House, a spiritual retreat in Thirsk, Changing Lives, in a substance misuse service in York and Phoenix Health and Well Being, an holistic centre for emotional and physical well being in Leeds.
I currently offer sessions from a dedicated room in my home based in the Clifton Moor area of York.

Typical issues that I support clients with include;
ANXIETY DEPRESSION ADDICTION RELATIONSHIP ISSUES FERTILITY PROBLEMS LOW SELF-ESTEEM/CONFIDENCE
SEXUAL ABUSE DOMESTIC ABUSE LOSS AND BEREAVEMENT IDENTITY ISSUES STRESS
Although I have experience in supporting people in a range of different areas, I have a particular interest in helping those struggling with addiction. Addiction can come in many forms and I believe that it is often a symptom of a deeper issue such as trauma or poor attachments in childhood. Whatever someone may be addicted to whether that is a substance or a behaviour, it has often been used as a strategy to help that person cope. I have several years of experience working in the addiction field. I can support you to find more helpful ways of coping whilst exploring the issues that have led to the addiction to help you move forward in your recovery.
